Frequently-Asked Questions
When and where is the March? Where do we go?The March for Women’s Lives will take place in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, April 25, 2004. Assembly begins at 10 a.m. on the National Mall between 3rd Street and 14th Street (between the Smithsonian Museums). There will be a morning program of speakers and entertainment before the March step-off. After the March, there will be a rally with speakers and performers that will conclude at approximately 5 p.m. How should I get into the District? Where can I park? Please take public transportation. DO NOT try to drive your car into Washington D.C. to attend the March. Parking in the city is always scarce, and many streets will be blocked off for this event. All public parking in the greater Washington area should be free on Sunday. Here is the Metrorail system map, and a list of Metro stations with public parking lots. Where can I download a map of the National Mall to bring? Here is a map to print (in pdf format). If I'm part of a delegation, where do I go?If you are part of a registered delegation with the March office, you will have a pre-determined assembly point on the Mall. If you have not done so already, register your delegation online by visiting http//www.marchforwomen.org and clicking "Form a Delegation." The perimeter of the Mall will be lined by clearly-identified volunteers who will direct delegation members to their "official" assembly point on the Mall. Please do not arrange a meeting place beforehand for your delegation. Directing everyone to the Mall will save time and minimize confusion so that your group can enjoy the morning program before the March actually steps off at 12 noon. Please remember that your delegation's actual step-off from the Assembly area will depend on the size the crowd. Just because your delegation isn't moving doesn't mean the March hasn't started. What should I wear and bring?Wear shoes and clothing that make you feel comfortable! Lots of people will be wearing the official March t-shirt and buttons. Things to bring include:
How can I buy March buttons and T-shirts?The official NOW March t-shirt and buttons will be on sale the day before and the day of the March at various sites. What is the distance of the March? The March route is approximately two miles long. Will there be counter-protests on April 25?While there will likely be counter-protesters on April 25, most of the information currently being circulated by anti-choice groups is false. The First Amendment grants them the right to hold a counter-protest, but it does not grant them the right to interfere with our demonstration. Washington D.C. police are already negotiating with the reproductive rights opponents to determine a specific site for their counter-protest that will minimize the possibility of confrontation. What accommodations will be provided for people with special needs? We will have open-air trolleys transporting people through the March route who otherwise could not participate. There will also be a special seating area at the morning and afternoon rallies for those who cannot stand, and those who need to view ASL interpreters. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own wheelchairs if possible. If you are part of a delegation and need this assistance, make sure your delegation’s leader indicates your seating needs on the online delegation form. If you are not part of a delegation and need seating on a trolley and/or at the rally, please contact the March Office with your name, contact info, and number of seats needed. Will there be simultaneous marches across the country on April 25?Through we understand the desire for simultaneous marches, we have chosen to put all of our efforts and resources into bringing people from across the country to one place for several reasons. Bringing everyone together in one place unites feminists from all over the country, from big cities and small towns alike. If you can't attend, you may want to gather friends to watch the events on C-SPAN! It is important to remember that the March is one step in an ongoing process. It is not the end or the final step. Get in touch with the NOW Action Center for help if you need it. In addition to attending in person, how can I support the March and NOW's work on abortion rights?
