Annual Feminist Events


January 3:  Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) born on this day.  In July 1848, she and Stanton called the Seneca Falls [NY] Convention and launched the women’s suffrage movement in the United States.

First Wednesday in January:  The Statename General Assembly opens its annual ninety-day session.

January 9:  Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) born on this day.  She successfully lead the final drive to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment.

January 22:  1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade protects women’s right to choose abortion.

February 15:  Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) born on this day.  She devoted 56 years to woman suffrage.

February 29:  Bissextus.  Celebrate!

March:  Women’s History Month.

First Tuesday in March:  Statename Primary Election.  VOTE for feminists!

March 8:  International Women’s Day.

April:  Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day
MS Foundation for Women initiated this event in 1992 to expand girls understanding of possible career opportunities and to encourage equal opportunities for women in the workplace.

Second Sunday in May:  Mothers Day
In 1905, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother, Ann Marie Jarvis.  In 1914, Anna’s hard work paid off when president Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mothers Day as a national holiday.

May:  Statename NOW annual conference.

June 29:  The National Organization for Women was formed in 1966 at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington, D.C., during the third National Conference of State Commissions on the Status of Women.  Twenty-seven women each contributed $5 to the cause.

July:  NOW's Intrepid Awards Gala

Friday to Sunday, July X1-X3:  annual National Organization for Women Conference in City, State.

August 26:  Liberty Day a/k/a Women’s Equality Day.
In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution became the law of the land.  After 144 years, U.S.A. law finally guarantees women’s inalienable right to vote.  Celebrate!

September 14:  Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) was born this day.  She started the fight for legal birth control in 1914 and founded International Planned Parenthood Federation in 1953.

October:  Love Your Body Day
Speak out against advertisements and images of women that are offensive, harmful, dangerous, and disrespectful.

First Tuesday in November:  General Election.  VOTE for feminists!

November 7:  Statename Constitution Article 46 Ratified 1972: Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged or denied because of sex.

November 12: Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) born on this day. In July 1848, she and Mott called the Seneca Falls [NY] Convention and launched the women’s suffrage movement in the United States.
