Web Address Forwarding
or, How to Have an Intuitive, Stable Web Address

Nowadays there are many options for NOW state organizations and chapters looking for free web space. But your web address may be long and non-intuitive (e.g., http://www.freespace.com/~12456/), or it may not be stable because that web provider may go out of business or the person whose account it is on may not keep that account. It is possible to purchase a domain name for your chapter or state, such as CA NOW has done, with http://www.canow.org/.

This option does involve a yearly fee with at least one company.

If you prefer, we can provide you with a free forwarding address on the National Action Center web site.

For example, a state organization could be:
http://www.now.org/mi/

or a chapter could be:
http://www.now.org/mi/detroitnow

  • How does it work?
  • It works like call forwarding — the web user will automatically be routed from our site to the address you have given us. They will see your real address in the box that shows the web address when they arrive at your site.

  • What does our state or chapter need to do to get this address?
  • Your organization must already have web space. Once you have web space, and have set up your web page, send a message to webperson@now.org with your address. The address you will be given on www.now.org will be in the format:

    http://www.now.org/statename/ OR
    http://www.now.org/statename/chaptername

  • How do we get web space if we don't already have it?

  • You can get free web space at many different sites on the web. A list can be found at http://freeweblist.freeservers.com/, which tells you any requirements of the site.

You might also find that one of your chapter members has an account with an Internet Service Provider that gives out free web space. For example, NOWworld accounts and America Online accounts come with 10 megabytes of free web space, which should be sufficient for most chapters. Even if that chapter member quits or changes accounts, you can still use the address on www.now.org, as long as you obtain replacement web space. Don't forget to tell us the new address so that we can redirect users to your new site.

  • How do we create a web page?

  • Start by reading the information posted on our site at http://www.now.org/web/create.html. We also are starting a Cybercoach program. It will match NOW members who are cyber-savvy with NOW chapter and state leaders who are cyber-newbies. To sign up, connect to http://www.now.org/web/coach.html, or send e-mail to webperson@now.org.
