Rachel Prehodka-Spindel
Attending my first protest at the local high school stadium with a sign attached to my stroller, the biggest struggle I knew was that between me and my sign which was more than twice my size. However, as I grew, I became aware of many greater struggles taking place and committed myself to joining organizations and participating in programs that would strengthen my ability to work for the betterment of society. Little did I know, as I sat in my stroller wrestling with that sign, that years later I would be president of Passaic County NOW.
As a child I attended numerous NOW meetings in the dining room of my house. Each active member of the chapter was like family to me. But slowly, over time, the chapter began to dwindle, being that most of the active members in the chapter had been such for over 25 years and felt it was time for the next generation to take over. Feeling that the chapter had not run any programs in several years, that our treasury was pretty much depleted, and that the meetings were not accomplishing much, discussion of dispersing the chapter came to the surface. Knowing that there was still much work to be done, I volunteered to assume the role of chapter coordinator. Now, two years later, the chapter has held several community programs, is steadily increasing its treasury, and has recruited several new members as well as reaching out to at large members.
Besides being president of Passaic County NOW, I also volunteer at my local Animal Shelter, where I have adopted 3 cats a dog and am employed part time as a vet tech at a local animal hospital. I am on the varsity volleyball for my high school. I love to cook. And there's nowhere I'd rather be than outdoors, whether it be at a march, a rally, a race weekend with my father (who races a 1953 MGTD) or a camping trip at the Delaware water Gap.
Currently, I am over my head in the college application process and am looking forward to attending college, and most likely majoring in political science, come September 2007.
