"Naturally, I want it to be easier for women to get involved in politics. I want them to think of politics and public service as a good place for them, as something honorable and something worthwhile for them to pursue. And the way they are going to do that is to say, 'If she can do it, I can do it.'" – Ann Richards
Politics in general can be intimidating and confusing. I dove in head-first, receiving a $10,000 grant from NOW to establish a Get Out The Vote (GOTV) office in Pontiac, Michigan. We ran a successful campaign for voter registration, education, and mobilization during the November 2006 election. The experience was amazing! I realize now more than ever, that we need young feminists to understand the political system in order to revolutionize it! I'm excited to be part of the YFTF efforts to organize around the 2008 election.
The super-human I call my mother continues to be the inspiration and role model behind my success as a feminist and as a human being. I've also been fortunate to have amazing mentors who have groomed me to become a feminist leader. I believe that mentors are the key to keeping feminism alive for future generations.
Currently, I work as a graduate assistant leading the student organization for the Women's & Gender Studies program at Eastern Michigan University. I also work for the Michigan Women's Commission, advising our pro-choice, female, democratic governor about issues of importance to Michigan women. Last but certainly not least, I am the Michigan NOW Young Feminist Task Force Chair – creating a network of remarkable young feminists around the state.
