Dakia Davis
In middle school I was accused by other black kids of wanting be white because I enjoyed reading and in high school I was told by my peers that my skin was too dark; this was before I ever heard of internalized racism. I knew that people were hurt and sometimes killed because of their race and sexuality, but no one said anything about hate crimes.
Before I knew terms like civil rights, social justice, oppression, activism, advocacy, feminism, I only knew that for various reasons, not everyone is treated equally. I understood that many do not have enough to eat each day, are not able to read, and out of work. Much later I was given the words and knowledge to work towards changing different injustices.
Now, I am Social Work and Women's & Gender Studies double major at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. This is definitely the best major combination for me; I can use what I learn about different social systems and world cultures to better fight for the rights and well-being of others. For instance, I would not be able to assist victims of assault as effectively if I did not understand why sexual and domestic violence were uniquely women's issues. I think most would agree that social work was a "no brainier" for me since I have always been interested in helping people. Most are unable to understand why I have chosen women and gender studies as a major. Women's studies, feminist studies, gender studies, however defined, this knowledge gives us the ability to look beyond the surface. With women and gender studies I can do more than ask what. I can answer how and why.
Some may not find it worth mentioning that I am from "the south," but I do. I am from a unique region of the country, with a history and culture that contribute to who I am the work that I do.
I am new to the NOW board as well as the Young Feminist Taskforce. I am excited that NOW is seizing the opportunity to bring young women as well as new ideas and leadership into the organization.
