Megan Campbell
Hi! My name is Megan Campbell, and I am thrilled to be embarking on my first year as a member of the Young Feminist Task Force. Originally from El Paso, Texas, I moved to Boston in 2001 to attend Boston University where I earned a degree in Political Science and minored in Women's Studies. It was during my sophomore year at BU that I interned for Boston NOW. After my semester internship, I joined the Boston NOW board as VP Action, and for the past year, I have served as a Co-President of the Greater Boston Chapter of NOW. I am also involved in other facets of the organization including the Boston NOW and Massachusetts NOW Political Action Committees that endorse feminist candidates for local and statewide offices (we recently had a great victory in the governor's race!) and in the Massachusetts NOW Foundation.
One of my great passions is reaching out to young women and working to make connections between their personal lives and feminism. One of the ways I worked to do this was, while at Boston University, I served as the president of the Boston University Women's Center, a feminist group on campus. Through the Women's Center, I worked to organize Take Back the Nights, a Women Rock! Fundraiser, and worked with the campus VOX group to organize students to attend the March for Women's Lives in 2004. Also, in 2006 Boston NOW dedicated our year to young feminists and held several events, including a financial literacy workshop, that were targeted at providing practical tools for young women throughout the area. Recently, I returned to BU, from which I graduated in 2005 with a degree in Political Science, to speak to several Women's Studies classes about the feminist activism taking place today and was excited to have so many people interested in getting involved.
As a 23 year-old feminist activist living in Boston, I often encounter young progressive women and men who love to espouse the ideals of reproductive freedom, equal rights for the LGBT community, and equal pay, but are unwilling to identify themselves as "feminists". I am looking forward to working with the amazing other members of the Task Force to find ways to bring people into the feminist movement and to continue the work of our foremothers.
