The National Organization for Women (NOW) will organize two activist events in 1999: the Lesbian Rights Summit will be held in Washington, DC on April 23-25, and the annual National NOW Conference will be held in Los Angeles on July 2-4.  Both promise to bring together feminists from across the country to strengthen the women's rights movement and address its strategies and agenda.

The Lesbian Rights Summit will give lesbians and allies the opportunity to discuss political strategies, share experiences and plan actions and agendas to further lesbian rights and to build and diversify the movement.  "As we approach the end of the 20th Century, we know the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community is under particular attack.  We are organizing the Summit to bring together lesbians and allies to discuss current challenges and future strategies," NOW President Patricia Ireland said.

In the summer, NOW will hold its national conference in Los Angeles.  The conference, which is NOW's annual meeting of members and supporters, will feature workshops and skills-building sessions which address all of NOW's major issues.  "We will celebrate Independence Day by working for women's independence and freedom," Ireland said.
