NOW Joins March and Rally at the Supreme Court
to Protect Diversity in Public Schools

NOW President Kim Gandy to Speak at Rally

December 1, 2006

On Monday, Dec. 4, the National Organization for Women will join students and civil rights leaders at the U.S. Supreme Court for a rally to promote diversity and protect the anti-segregation principles of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

NOW President Kim Gandy will join Reverend Jesse L. Jackson from the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Reverend Al Sharpton, NAACP President Bruce Gordon, Congressmember Maxine Waters and others at a press conference outside the court.

On that day, the Supreme Court is expected to hear oral arguments in two lawsuits that aim to outlaw voluntary local initiatives in the Louisville, Ky., and Seattle, Wash., school districts that help prevent increased segregation in their public schools.

"Integrated education benefits all students and our nation as a whole. The residents and educators in these districts sought to create a school system where girls and boys of all races learn together," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "The future of these programs-and perhaps affirmative action itself-now lies in the hands of nine Supreme Court justices. Will they turn back the clock on decades of progress?"
