Media availability settlement hearing in sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuit against NOW Merchant of Shame Smith-Barney

Tuesday, November 18, 1997
Immediately following 10 a.m. hearing

U.S. District Court Building
Judge Motley's Chambers
500 Pearl St. (at Worth)
New York, NY

To comment on the settlement and discuss possible next steps in NOW's campaign to end mandatory arbitration

"NOW named Smith-Barney a Merchant of Shame in our Women-Friendly Workplace Campaign to highlight this company's intransigence in the face of sexual harassment and sex discrimination complaints. We remain concerned that they insist on mandatory arbitration of discrimination claims as a condition of employment. Tomorrow's settlement will be an important factor in our decision to maintain or halt our pickets against Smith-Barney," Ireland said.

NOW's Women-Friendly Workplace Campaign applies grassroots pressure on businesses to implement feminist policies including affirmative action, effective deterrents to sexual harassment, health insurance plans that cover all members of an employee's family, family-friendly policies and respect for workers' rights to organize.
