NOW President Patricia Ireland will talk about the issues that are facing women, especially due to the results in the November elections, during three public appearances in Ohio in early December.
For the first time in U.S. history, the majority of women voters supported the winning presidential candidate, while the majority of men voted for the loser. "Because of the gender gap, women's votes put us in the driver's seat," Ireland said. "This is not the time to fall asleep at the wheel."
Ireland's Ohio speeches will be part of events in which she discusses and signs her book, What Women Want (Dutton, June 1996), which offers a timely and intimate look at the inside of the women's rights movement. As NOW celebrates its 30th anniversary, Ireland describes her own path to success, the struggle for feminist progress and her vision for the future. The Ohio speeches will provide a sneak-preview of the post-election epilogue to the book, which will be included in the paperback edition due out next spring.
Since assuming the presidency of NOW in December 1991, Ireland has become one of the most influential feminist leaders in the U.S. She has used her varied experiences as a stewardess, corporate lawyer and ground-breaking activist to move NOW to the forefront of the political scene. With 250,000 members, NOW is recognized as a key player in efforts to improve political and economic conditions for women in this country and around the world.
