NOW Executive Vice President Kim Gandy said today's vote by the U.S. House to ban a medically important late-term abortion procedure is just another step in the campaign orchestrated by anti- abortionists to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate legal abortion.

"The House's action demonstrates the hypocrisy of the Republican leadership and their call for less government intrusion into people's lives," Gandy said. "This bill represents the ultimate in government intrusion -- into medicine, into examining and operating rooms, into women's private lives.

"Inflammatory, vague language in the bill, pressure from anti-abortionists and an emotionally charged campaign of misinformation clouded the real issue here: abortion foes will stop at nothing to end legal abortion. Today, the House opted to practice medicine despite the potentially deadly consequences for women who need medically prescribed late-term abortions. This bill, if it becomes law, will amount to mandated medical malpractice.

"This manufactured anti-abortion hysteria must end with the Senate or ultimately with President Clinton," Gandy said. "It's time our politicians reclaim their roles as representatives of ALL people instead of acting as mouthpieces of the religious right. Women's rights activists fought hard to legalize abortion and we will not let our rights be slowly chipped away by hypocritical politicians."
