ABC/Disney's Emperor Has No Clothes: Hawks Underwear Commercial As Entertainment Programming
November 15, 2001
"During November sweeps, the ABC network is making a sad attempt to lift its ratings with Miracle Bras," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on Disney-owned ABC takes viewers another step closer toward the complete commercialization of TV."
Airing tonight, the hour-long "special" will appear on ABC stations -- the first time Victoria's Secret has run its "fashion show" on broadcast television. "It's like one big infomercial," said Gandy. "Is ABC giving away air time to advertisers now? If this trend continues, the search for quality programming will become even more frustrating."
"It's because of shows like this that NOW is gearing up for its third annual Watch Out, Listen Up!" said Gandy. Viewers across the country will be analyzing programming on the six broadcast networks. They will be watching for gender and racial balance, violence, sexual exploitation and social responsibility, and NOW will release a media report card in spring 2002.
"There are good shows on TV, but you have to look for them," added Gandy. "I for one will be watching Will & Grace tonight at nine, not a parade of women in angel wings taking us down the runway toward product placement Hell."
