NOW President Patricia Ireland Mobilizes Maine Voters In

Final Countdown to Defeat Question 1

October 18, 1999

National Organization for Women (NOW) President Patricia Ireland will strategize with Maine NOW PAC organizers and campus activists in the final weeks of the campaign to defeat Question 1 at the polls November 2.  As a part of "Young Women's Day of Action" on October 21, Ireland will also speak at a luncheon and an evening rally on the University of Maine's Orono campus.

"Question 1 is a back-door attempt to outlaw all abortions at every stage of pregnancy," Ireland said.  "Anti-abortion rights forces are trying to fool voters into believing that Question 1only targets a specific late-term procedure.  The truth is that Question 1 purposely contains deceptively broad language, no clear definition of the procedure, no restriction to the third trimester and no exception for a woman's health.  Our message to voters is: Don't buy the Lie; Vote No on One."
