TOP NOW LEADERS TARGET NEW HAMPSHIRE ELECTIONS

MONDAY, OCT. 14, 1996

National Organization for Women President Patricia Ireland and Vice President-Action Rosemary Dempsey visit New Hampshire this week stumping for candidates in two key elections and mobilizing college students to get out the vote Nov. 5.

As part of NOW PACs' Elect Women for a Change campaign, Ireland, Dempsey and NOW PAC organizers in Manchester are supporting gubernatorial candidate Jeanne Shaheen and congressional candidate Arnie Arnesen in District 2. NOW and NOW PACs are also conducting similar coordinated campaigns to elect feminist candidates and defeat bad ballot initiatives in California, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina.

"If we're ever going to get a woman in the White House we have to get more women in governor's mansions and on Capitol Hill," Ireland said. "We're determined to change the face of Congress and to fill political pipelines across this country with elected officials who will fight for the rights of all people."

On Saturday, Ireland, along with Shaheen, Arnesen and other candidates, will address the New Hampshire NOW Conference '96: "The Women's Vote." Dempsey's tour of state college campuses includes voter registration efforts and organizing workshops.
