NOW Launches New Web Site with First Feminist Virtual March

October 16, 2000

"On October 17, the National Organization for Women will launch its dynamic new web site with the Internet's first feminist Virtual March," said NOW Executive Vice President Kim Gandy, who is taking the lead on the organization's Internet expansion. "For women and men around the world who were unable to attend the World March of Women 2000, NOW's Virtual March will bring the event to them."

The World March of Women is a series of international actions in more than 155 countries demanding an end to poverty and violence against women and calling for equality between women and men. NOW organized the U.S. action in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, October 15, and Internet users everywhere can relive the March on Tuesday, October 17 beginning at 12 noon Eastern Standard Time.

"Through the Virtual March, NOW plans to bring together the largest group of feminists ever online," said Gandy.  "If you can connect to the Internet on your home computer, at the public library or a local community center, you can be a part of this global demonstration."

By logging onto NOW's new web site at www.now.org on October 17, cyber-marchers can access streaming video of inspiring speeches by leaders in the social justice movement and lively performances by progressive entertainers. The Virtual March will make web activists feel as if they were right in the middle of the World March of Women. A video diary of one young woman's experience the day of the World March will bring the excitement of marching to thousands more participants.

NOW is pairing the Virtual March with the kick-off of the organization's new web site. NOW's web site is already heavily trafficked and an award-winner for its extensive coverage of women's issues. The revamped site will have a fresh look and new features such as daily feminist news updates, opinion polls and bulletin boards. NOW also plans to enter the arena of Internet Service Providers by the end of the year. The NOW Internet Service will be available to anyone who wants to subscribe to a women-friendly Internet provider that creates content with their interests in mind.

"The Internet is a powerful tool for women's rights activists and NOW's goal is to use it to its full potential," said Gandy.  "We are taking the first step in creating a feminist village that will serve our community for a long time to come."
