NOW PAC Endorses U.S. Senate Candidate Kweisi Mfume

September 8, 2006

The National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC) is proud to endorse U.S. Senate candidate Kweisi Mfume, who is a strong supporter of NOW's primary goal to achieve equality for all women.

"I am honored to have the support of the National Organization for Women," said Mfume. "NOW stands for many of the values that need greater attention from our government and in our society."

NOW President Kim Gandy had strong words of support for Mfume.

"Women's rights are being challenged in every arena, from equal pay at work to the right to use contraception at home," said Gandy. "We are endorsing Kweisi Mfume because he is a passionate, articulate and effective advocate for change, and this Congress is in desperate need of change."

Duchy Trachtenberg, president of the NOW Maryland Chapter, concurred:

"Peace is a feminist issue and the Iraq war has been a key issue in Mfume's campaign," said Trachtenberg. "But it is not the only issue. He is a national leader who has been unwavering in his support for women's rights, including reproductive justice. Kweisi always speaks truth to power and this is exactly the kind of representation that Maryland women need and deserve."

Mfume has focused his election efforts on several issues that are of concern to women and those long advocated for by NOW.

"We must use Maryland's Senate seats to fight for Maryland families," said Mfume. "We need early education programs so that our children get off on the right foot in life. We need expanded day care for working mothers. We should strengthen the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program which has been so successful."

Mfume concluded by saying "It is also imperative that we reform our health care system to cover everyone. A Medicare-style single payer system would do that. It would also help end the disparities that women face in our current system."

NOW PAC applauds Mfume's commitment to women's rights and his dedication for change.
