NOW URGES CONGRESSMAN MEL REYNOLDS TO RESIGN

AUGUST 29, 1995

National Organization for Women leaders today called for the voluntary resignation of U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds (D-Ill) following his conviction by a jury on charges of sexually assaulting a minor, child pornography and obstructing justice.

"As we have informed Rep. Reynolds, we take all charges of sexual assault and misconduct very seriously," NOW Action Vice President Rosemary Dempsey said. "NOW advocates for both parties to have a fair hearing and their `day in court,' and in this case a jury of his peers found Rep. Reynolds guilty.

"He has undermined the trust of the voters who elected him to office, and his conviction is incompatible with continued service as a public official. Consequently, Rep. Reynolds should immediately resign."
