PRESS CONFERENCE TO KICK OFF GEORGIA NOW ACTIVITIES

AUG. 17, 1995

WHO : NOW President Patricia Ireland, Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney

WHAT : Will hold a press conference

WHEN : Friday, Aug. 18, at 12 noon

WHERE : at the Georgia State Capitol on the Capitol Street side at the statue "Expelled Because of Color"

WHY : to address key national issues, plans for the 1996 elections and political and social issues on the Georgia NOW conference agenda.

"The 1992 elections changed the face of Congress and a record number of women, African-Americans and Latinos were sent to Washington, D.C., for the first time from many states -- particularly Southern states such as Georgia," said NOW President Patricia Ireland. "Recent court decisions challenging redistricting threaten to reverse advances made by women and people of color in this country, but we will not be sidelined again. "As we fight back attacks against the Voting Rights Act, affirmative action, reproductive rights and poor people, the public increasingly fears that Newt Gingrich and his Congressional cronies are going too far. So if the conservative right-wingers thought 1992 was a bad political dream, then 1996 may prove to be their worst nightmare."

The Georgia NOW conference takes place Saturday, August 19, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Holiday Inn Atlanta Central. For further information, contact Melinda Shelton at national NOW headquarters at (202)331-0066.
