NOW PLANS PROTEST AGAINST SENATE ETHIC PANEL'S PARTISAN SUPPORT OF BOB PACKWOOD

AUG. 2, 1995

WHO : The National Organization for Women and local women's rights groups and supporters

WHAT : Will have a demonstration

WHEN : Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995, at 9 a.m.

WHERE : On Constitution Avenue between 1st and 2nd streets, Northeast

WHY : To protest actions by Republicans on the Senate Ethics Committee to aid and abet Sen. Bob Packwood by refusing to hold public hearings.

"While some Senate committees hold public hearings on politically contrived matters such as Whitewater, the ethics committee whitewashes credible charges against Packwood by operating behind closed doors," said NOW President Patricia Ireland. "This behavior not only smacks of partisan politics, it is an insult to women across the country. And this inaction adds insult to injury for the women who dared to speak out. "Given the way senators attacked Anita Hill in televised, public hearings, we can only imagine the treatment Packwood's 29 accusers received under the shroud of secrecy. Committee Republicans are in a conspiracy with Packwood to shift the blame for his unethical, immoral actions to the women, and they are trying to silence the women by denying them the public hearing they have awaited for nearly three years."
