FEMINISTS TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR HUNGER FOR JUSTICE THROUGH FAST TO STOP PUNITIVE WELFARE MEASURE

MONDAY, JULY 29, 1996

Feminist activists this week are planning dramatic steps to urge President Clinton to veto the punitive welfare bill likely to emerge from a conference committee. NOW President Patricia Ireland and other progressive activists will hold a demonstration Thursday outside the White House. At the demonstration they will announce details of a more extensive campaign, including a fast to be launched when the bill reaches the president.

WHO: NOW President Patricia Ireland and other activists

WHAT: Demonstration in Support of Poor Women's Rights

WHERE: White House sidewalk, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

WHEN: Thursday, August 1, 12 noon

WHY: "We will make sure President Clinton knows that women want to end poverty -- not punish poor women and their families," said Ireland. "We are calling on him to keep his promise to veto any measure that further impoverishes women and children. There is nothing `moderate' about that kind of measure or the people who are backing it.
