2003 National NOW Conference Agenda Highlights for the Media

All main events (plenaries) and the Political Institute Lunch take place in the Crystal Ballroom. Workshops will be in the following rooms: Commonwealth, Federal Hall, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Van Buren and Wilson.


Friday July 11, 2003

10:15-11:30 AM -- Workshops
Topics Include: Welfare Debate, Family Court Bias, Title IX, Issues Facing Latina Lesbians, Strengthening Hate Crimes Legislation.

12:00-1:45 PM -- Political Institute Brown Bag Lunch with U.S. Representatives Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.)

2:00-3:15 PM -- Workshops, Political Institute
Topics Include: Save Women's Lives: March for Freedom of Choice in April 2004, Media Monopolies, Feminism in Religion, Global Women's Rights, Dealing With Sexual Assault. Political Institute Topic: Finding Feminist Candidates.

3:30-4:45 PM -- Workshops, Political Institute
Topics Include: War and Peace, Constitutional Equality, Sexual Violence in the Military, Young Women's Reproductive Rights, Defending and Strengthening the Social Safety Net, Using Technology to Mobilize Activists. Political Institute Topic: Mobilizing the Next Generation.

5:00-7:00 PM -- Plenary II
Elections 2004: Presidential Candidates Forum, moderated by NOW President Kim Gandy with political comedian Elayne Boosler


Saturday July 12, 2003

9:00-10:15 AM -- Workshops, Political Institute
Topics Include: Gender Theory, LGBT Rights, Latinas in the U.S., Alternative Therapies in Women's Health, Economic Impact of Care-giving, How Men Can Stop Violence Against Women. Political Institute Topic: Voter Registration.

10:30-12:00 PM -- Plenary III
Leadership in the 21st Century: Author/Activist Rebecca Walker joins an Intergenerational Panel of NOW Leaders

2:00-3:15 PM -- Workshops, Political Institute
Topics Include: Wal-Mart as a Merchant of Shame, Stopping the Federal Court Packing, Globalization and Women's Rights, Sexual Violence in the African American Community. Political Institute Topic: Getting Out the Vote.

3:30-5:00 PM -- Plenary IV
Drive for Equality: D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, NOW President Kim Gandy, Woman of Courage Award to U.S. Representative Barbara Lee (D-Calif.)

5:15-6:30 PM -- Workshops
Topics Include: Saving Affirmative Action, The Drive for Equality: Beating Bush in 2004, Protecting Women's Health and Reproductive Rights, Feminism in Country Music
