NOW to Protest Ultraconservative Bill That Will Keep Poor Women Poor June 13, 2002 "We know how to reduce poverty. Yet for some reason the ultraconservatives and mushy moderates in Congress seem bent on keeping poor families poor," said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. "The Senate has the chance to pass a welfare reauthorization bill that will actually reduce poverty, rather than simply kick poor women off the roles to prove superficial short-term success. The illusion of reform shouldn't fool anyone." Gandy will protest with Washington area activists outside the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Monday, June 17, demanding welfare reform that has the best interests of poor women and their families in mind. The Senate's welfare bill is expected to be in the Finance Committee for markup as soon as Tuesday, June 18. Who: NOW President Kim Gandy and Local Activists What: Protest to Demand Real Welfare Reform When: Monday, June 17, Noon Where: Outside Dirksen Senate Building "Education, fair job opportunities and work supports like child care and transportation are key to real welfare reform and essential for lifting poor women and their families out of poverty," Gandy said. "It's high time the Senate gets the drift and passes the most family-friendly welfare bill the country has seen." ### For Immediate ReleaseContact: Lisa Bennett, 202-628-8669, ext. 123; cell 301-537-7429 |
