"Women's rights supporters from across the country will gather in St. Paul, Minnesota, to do just that. The aptly titled 2002 National NOW Conference: Linking Arms in Dangerous Times will bring activists together from diverse backgrounds to fight for common goals." What: 2002 National NOW Conference: Linking Arms in Dangerous Times When: June 21 to June 23 Where: Radisson Riverfront St. Paul Linking Arms in Dangerous Times will feature movers and shakers from across the country, including Rep. Patsy Mink (D-Hawaii) and Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) President and founder Eleanor Smeal. NOW will present Mink and Smeal with its first-ever Women of Vision awards. Mink was one of the first members of Congress to speak out in support of Title IX, which has required gender equity in education since its passage in 1972. She has also been a longtime champion of women's rights on Capitol Hill. Smeal, a former NOW President, led the first U.S. efforts against gender apartheid in Afghanistan beginning in 1996. As the head of FMF, she continues to pursue equal rights for Afghan women in the country's post-Taliban era. "In addition to inspiring speakers and women of courage awards, the 2002 NOW conference will feature hard-hitting workshops, campaign and organizing sessions through the third annual Political Institute, celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the signing of Title IX and fun entertainment," Gandy said. "During the conference weekend, NOW will also announce a fifth Merchant of Shame—a Fortune 500 company with an appalling track record of workplace abuses—and protest at a local site.
