NOW President Patricia Ireland to Lead Abortion Rights Protest at Supreme Court

April 24, 2000

"Once again Roe v. Wade is up for review before a hostile Court," said NOW President Patricia Ireland as she announced an abortion rights protest in front of the U.S. Supreme Court to be held immediately prior to oral arguments in the Stenberg v. Carhart case.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in Stenberg v. Carhart on April 25, 2000.  At issue in this case is the constitutionality of Nebraska's abortion procedures ban.  The case challenges the remaining distinctions between pre- and post-viability standards and the requirement of an exception in post-viability bans to preserve the woman's health.

"Anti-abortion extremists are using abortion procedures bans as an underhanded strategy to stop abortion," Ireland said.  "If the Court upholds the constitutionality of abortion procedures bans, safe abortion procedures will be eliminated, regardless of trimester or health risks to women."

What:  Abortion Rights Protest

When: Tuesday, April 25 at  9:30 AM

Where: U.S. Supreme Court

"We call on the justices to strike down the Nebraska law, just as most of the lower courts have struck down similar bans," Ireland said.
