YOUNG FEMINISTS NATIONWIDE HEED CALL FOR ACTION AT NOW FOUNDATION'S YOUNG FEMINIST SUMMIT, APRIL 11-13

MONDAY, MARCH 31, 1997

Hundreds of young feminists from across the country will convene in Washington, D.C., for the 1997 NOW Foundation Young Feminist Summit, April 11-13.

Activists with diverse backgrounds, experiences and heritages share a common goal: to effect change in their schools and communities. Change on campuses where rape and assault are everyday threats. Change in school hallways where sexual harassment is a reality. Change to stem attacks against reproductive health choices and services. And change in the workplace, where equal work does not guarantee equal pay.

"Make no mistake, the obstacles before us are great," said NOW Foundation President Patricia Ireland. "But by working together as feminists of every age, failure is truly impossible and the future will be as clear as our shared vision."

Summit highlights include:

Keynote addresses by Ireland; Ms. magazine Editor-in Chief Marcia Gillespie; U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, D-Hawaii; Ileanne Jimenez, program manager for MANA, a national Latina organization; and Salt Lake City high school activist Rachel Bauchman.

Informational workshops exploring issues such as sexual harassment, women-friendly workplaces, reproductive rights, racism and classism, sexual orientation and gender identity, safer sex, body image and eating disorders, and violence against women.

Skill-building sessions on campus and community organizing, self-defense, and effective media use.

Presentation of "Making a Difference Awards" to Kelli Peterson, a lesbian rights high school activist; to New Moon, a magazine written for and by young girls; and to HUES (Hear Us Emerging Sisters) Magazine, an international publication for women of all cultures, shapes and lifestyles.

A "zap action" in front of the White House, Sunday, April 13.
