NOW President Kim Gandy Responds to New Orleans Archbishop, Defends Loyola University School of Law March 15, 2002
"I'm feeling very protective toward my law school," said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy, responding to New Orleans Archbishop Alfred Hughes' statement opposing her upcoming speaking engagement at the Loyola University School of Law. The Archbishop cited NOW's and Gandy's work for reproductive rights as "contrary to the clear and unambiguous teachings of the Catholic Church." Gandy is scheduled to speak at Loyola Law School on Wednesday, March 20 at 7pm in Room 308.
"The Archbishop of New Orleans is urging my law school to do away with traditional academic freedom of speech and replace the free exchange of ideas with religious doctrine," Gandy said. "I imagine that Archbishop Hughes finds this flame-throwing a welcome relief from the heat of Church cover-ups of pedophilia."
"This is a law school, not a seminary. A law school is supposed to teach law, not church doctrine," Gandy continued. "Loyola's Law School's job is to develop lawyers, thinkers and scholars, not religious ideologues."
