Society Must Learn Important Lessons from Andrea Yates Case March 15, 2002
The National Organization for Women is relieved that the jury in the Andrea Yates trial chose a life sentence in prison over sending her to death row. "NOW is opposed to the death penalty in all cases," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "But we are particularly concerned when the state pursues the execution of a person who was obviously mentally ill at the time of the crime."
"While we believe that Andrea Yates belongs in a mental health facility rather than prison, we do thank the jury for sparing her life."
NOW has attempted to raise public awareness about postpartum depression and psychosis in the hope that future tragedies might be prevented. "We must not walk away from the lessons learned from this extremely sad case. Postpartum psychosis is a serious condition that requires increased medical research, responsive health care, expanded insurance coverage and strong support systems for the women and their families," stressed Gandy. "Appropriate treatment and community education may ultimately save lives."
