NOW Launches U.S. Kick-off of the World March of Women 2000

March 6, 2000

The National Organization for Women (NOW) will unite with other women's and progressive groups to celebrate International Women's Day with the U.S. launch of the World March of Women 2000, a worldwide series of coordinated women's rights demonstrations.  All of the World March of Women 2000 events around the globe share a common demand: an end to poverty and violence against women.

"As we approach the new millennium, NOW is committed to taking action with women and men around the world.  Our common problems far outnumber our national differences," said NOW President Patricia Ireland.

What:  U.S. Kick-Off of the World March of Women 2000

When: 12 Noon on Wednesday, March 8

Where: Capitol Grounds on the Senate Triangle
(East side of the Capitol, across from the Supreme Court)

What:  Picket to Demand Passage of CEDAW

When: 12:30 PM on Wednesday, March 8

  Where: Dirksen Senate Office Building
(Constitution Avenue, NE, between First and Second Streets)

Following a news conference to announce march details, activists will picket the office of Sen. Jesse Helms to urge him to schedule a vote to ratify the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).  Helms has blocked CEDAW, which is an international Bill of Rights for women, and the U.S. is one of the last nations holding out on ratification, despite pleas from many women members of Congress to move forward.

"We are going to tell Sen. Helms to stop stalling women's rights," Ireland said.
