National Feminist Leaders Protest Nomination of Alleged Batterer as Federal Prosecutor in New Orleans

February 1, 2002

"Two women have now come forward with credible accounts of domestic violence at the hands of Frederick Heebe, George Bush's nominee to serve as the U.S. Attorney in New Orleans -- a position charged with enforcement of the federal Violence Against Women Act," said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. "Their compelling stories not only warrant the attention of the FBI, but the concern of the President who called for 'respect for women' in his address on Tuesday."

Gandy, a former New Orleans attorney today announced that she will lead a protest on Saturday outside the Washington Hilton Hotel, site of the Washington Mardi Gras Ball, to persuade the movers and shakers of Louisiana to join her in opposing Heebe's nomination. Gandy will be joined by former Tulane Law Professor Terry O'Neill, local NOW activists, and members of NOW's National Board, which is meeting this weekend.

Who: NOW President Kim Gandy, National NOW Board Members

What: Protest to Oppose Heebe Nomination

Where: Washington Hilton
Corner of Connecticut Avenue and T Street, NW
Washington, D.C.

When: Saturday, February 2, 12:30 PM

"Two women have recounted abuse at the hands of Frederick Heebe," Gandy said. "Allowing the nomination to go forward without addressing these allegations would be a disservice to every woman in Louisiana."
