Statement of NOW President Patricia Ireland
January 20, 2001
Feminists are out in force this Inauguration Day to demonstrate that
while our votes weren't all counted, our voices will be heard.
Many of us who opposed George W. Bush harbor extreme frustration stemming
from a sense of fundamental injustice. NOW activists vow to turn that deep
anger into determined activism and to stand together with others who are
doing the same
We are confident NOW and our allies can mobilize sufficient public pressure on the White House and the Senate to prevent a roll-back of our rights. Remember, the majority of voters rejected the positions of Bush and the Republican Party platform. Bush and Cheney must be made to see that the polarizing fights they have instigated over controversial Cabinet nominations only strengthen our resolve and, ultimately, weaken their administration.
The next elections begin in less than two years, and a disproportionate number of our opponents in the Senate must stand for reelection at that time. We have already started to identify and promote candidates who support feminist issues to run for the Senate and help us close the gap in the House. Our activists are gearing up in the states to impact redistricting decisions so that incumbent feminists will not be gerrymandered out of their seats.
We are inspired and encouraged today by so much spirited protest. So
many long-time and brand-new activists are actively involved in building
the strength of our movements. The words of Susan B. Anthony reach forward
from the 20th to the 21st century to remind us that with people such as
these, failure is impossible.
