NOW President Patricia Ireland to Lead Candlelight Vigil to Keep Abortion Legal

January 19, 2000

"Women's access to safe, legal abortion is in jeopardy.  We must use this year's Roe anniversary to issue a wake-up call to voters," said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Patricia Ireland, referring to the 27th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that recognized abortion as a constitutional right.

Ireland will lead NOW's demonstration in front of the High Court just one week after the justices agreed to review an abortion procedure ban enacted in Nebraska.  The vigil is being organized by Capital City NOW -- a local chapter in Washington, DC.  Abortion rights supporters -- including members of NOW's National Board -- will gather at 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 22.

"We are one justice away from the overturn of the already eroded Roe decision.  We no longer can count on the Court to undo Congress's dirty deeds," Ireland said, referring to recent attempts by the House and Senate to restrict access to reproductive health services.

"As we head into the election season, we must recommit ourselves to supporting the feminist candidates who support women's rights," Ireland said.
