THE BIRTH OF THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT

The Rochester - Seneca Falls area is rich in feminist history.  This tour will be an uplifting journey following NOW's annual conference.

In July 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and four friends advertised in the local paper "A Convention to discuss the social, civil and religious condition of women."  Three hundred women and men answered the call to the first Women's Rights Convention in this country.  One hundred signed the "Declaration of Sentiments," which began...

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal," and went on to call for the right for women to vote - a very radical goal.  The convention was ridiculed by most newspapers.  One editorial called the meeting "the most shocking and unnatural incident ever recorded in the history of womanity."

But the Seneca Falls convention sparked a movement of grassroots feminist activism across the country.  Two weeks after the Seneca Falls convention a similar convention was held in Rochester, N.Y., and other cities and states soon followed.  These conventions shaped the ideology of the movement and made women's rights part of the public discourse.
