HonoreesJosie Ashton, herself a domestic violence survivor, walked 1,600 miles down the East Coast to raise awareness about domestic violence in the Latina community. Ashton's month-long walk inspired the "Brides' March," which has taken place every year since then on Sept. 26. She is currently Executive Director of the Safespace Foundation, which offers financial assistance, information, referrals and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence. Barbara Boxer, United States Senator from California, has been a tireless advocate for women, children, and families over the course of her 22 years of public service. Always willing to speak out on critical issues, no matter how controversial, Senator Boxer demonstrated singular courage and leadership earlier this year when she took a principled stand for electoral justice and democracy by objecting to the certification of the State of Ohio's 2004 electoral votes. Jane Goodall began her landmark study of chimpanzees in Tanzania in June 1960, under the mentorship of anthropologist and paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. Her work at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve would become the foundation of future primatological research and redefine the relationship between humans and animals. |
