NOW National Conference: 2007

Young Feminist Leadership Institute

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of the Young Feminist Leadership Institute (YFLI)?

The YFLI is a series of workshops and activities at the National NOW Conference, so all you have to pay is the cost of registration for the conference, which is sliding scale to $0 for NOW members, $175 for non-members, and offers a $35 rate for non-members who are interns or students. Also, if you can only attend on certain days, there is a daily rate of $65. If you are looking for the most cost-efficient route and are not yet a member, we recommend that you join NOW for anywhere between $15 and $35 -- that way, you can register at any amount for the conference.

If you are coming from far away and need a place to stay, you can either stay at the hotel where the conference is being held at a rate of $118/night, or opt for alternative housing, which you can sign up for when you register.

What do you mean by "young?" What will be the age-range of participants at the YFLI?

We define "young" to be anyone at or under 30 years old. We expect that the majority of YFLI participants will range in age from late teens to late twenties. As part of the National Conference, though, the YFLI is open to all conference attendees.

Is the YFLI separate from the National Conference?

No, the YFLI is a series of workshops and activities occurring at the National Conference, and it is open to all conference attendees. Those participating in the YFLI will be able to attend all conference plenary sessions (which are when the keynote speeches are given), if they so choose.

What do I have to do to earn a certificate at the end of the Institute?

If you would like to earn a certificate at the end of the YFLI, you will need to attend at least four of the six YFLI workshops and at least one of the four YFLI meal-time activities. If you would like to attend fewer than this number of YFLI offerings (for example, if there are other conference workshops occurring at the same time that you'd prefer to go to), you are welcome to do so, but you will not receive a certificate.

What should I wear?

There is no dress code for the conference, so you may wear casual clothing.

Where is the conference and how do I get there?

The conference is in Dearborn, Michigan, at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn. If you are flying in, you should fly into the Detroit Metro Airport (Airport Code: DTW). For cheaper flight fares, you can check out www.southwest.com and www.northwest.com, or use www.sidestep.com to search for flights on multiple airlines. For driving directions and information on getting from the airport to the hotel, please go to the conference website.

How can I hook up with others in my area to arrange to share a ride or share a hotel room?

Post a message on the NOW ride/housing share message boards!

What's the food situation?

Reasonably priced breakfasts will be available at Perks Coffee Shop on the lobby level of the hotel where the conference is located. A cash and carry lunch will be available on the second level Bistro. Items include: French fries $2, hot dog $3, sandwich/salad starting at $5.00, chips $1, soda/water $2.

At dinner time, free shuttles will be running to take you to downtown Dearborn, TGI Friday's, and to the mall across from the hotel. You can view a restaurant list here.
