Cottage in Maine

Week-long stay at Loon Cove, Newfield Maine on Balch lake. Check website for availability:www.looncoveholiday.com.

Enjoy a peaceful, relaxing week-long holiday on Loon Cove in historic Newfield, Maine.

"Camp Loon", a tidy, well-appointed, cozy and airy cottage, is just a few short steps from your very own sandy beach on pristine Balch Lake. From your Adirondack chair on the deck, look past the birch grove and stands of pine to the cove beyond where the fish are quick to rise and the ducks swim idly by.

The cottage is on the Maine/New Hampshire state line, so you can, with just a few strokes, swim from Maine to New Hampshire, or swim out for a sunny mid morning nap on the swim raft. Or, row the Puffin Dory, or paddle the canoe or kayak around tiny islands, explore the little inlets, and drift along the piney shores. The lake is 3.5 miles long, so you can take a picnic and make a day of it.

Bask in the warmth of Maine's summer sun as you read your novels while you recline in your chaise. Write postcards or peruse magazines by the sandy beach while you enjoy the enticing aromas of dinner on the grill.

Perhaps a song by the campfire and some stargazing in the balmy summer's eve night is on your wish list --- no problem! Enjoy the evening call of the loons as you drift into blissful sleep, dreaming of a string of carefree tomorrows romping and splashing in the Lake.

Bring your bathing suit, camera and your watercolors.

Specifics: Weekly rentals from June through October. The cottage sleeps six, with two bedrooms, one bath and a sleeping loft. Two docks and a swim raft. The fishing is superb! Enjoy a trip around the lake in the canoe, dory or kayak. Grill by the lake on the charcoal Weber. There is a small tv and many videos, all of the requisite cooking gear save perhaps a torch for the crème caramel. Please bring your own linens. Enjoy!

A Pair of Beautiful Handmade Mola Pillows, featuring mermaid molas, painstakingly created by Kuna Women from the San Blas islands of Panama

photos of the pillowsThe Kuna people are the indigenous tribe who live on small coral islands in the Kuna Yala province of Panama, in the San Blas Archipelago along the Panama's Atlantic coast. The Kuna Yala economy is based largely on farming and fishing, and the people have a long tradition of international trade. While the Kuna men traditionally farm and fish, an increasingly important part of the Kuna economy is the sale of colorful, hand-sewn; molas, made and sold primarily by the Kuna women.

The mola is the signature art of the Kuna women and is thought to have originated with a Kuna tradition of elaborate body painting. The word "mola" is the Kuna Indian word for blouse and the term has grown to refer to the elaborate embroidered panels that make up the front and back of a Kuna woman's blouse. Molas designs are rich in form and content and incorporate symbols and images of Kuna culture and every day life. The women create their colorful and elaborate textile art using tiny needles and an intricate multilayer reverse appliqué technique.

Most Kuna women are mola artists. Their stature in Kuna society is elevated and reinforced by by the sale of their molas and the income that their sales provide.

Hand-blown NOW beer glasses (pints) and wine goblets, created specifically for this year's auction

Made by Jennifer and David Clancy of Clancy Designs, Jamestown, R.I., http://www.clancydesigns.com/

Jennifer and David Clancy, partners in art and partners in life, live in Jamestown, R.I., in an 18th century millers cottage in the shadow of the windmill alongside their glass studio where they create magnificent works of art. Their hand blown glass treasures are oftentimes functional, usually whimsical, colorful and fanciful and always beautiful. Their glassworks are entirely the products of their imaginations, their talent and their training. As their 2007 donation to NOW, they are designing and producing six NOW pint glasses and six NOW goblets, specifically for the NOW member who wants to raise a glass to feminism, equal pay, equal rights, and beautiful art!
