Our conference is back inside the Beltway for the first time in 20 years and it couldn't be a more crucial time for us to be here with our allies and friends, to re-energize and strategize for the months and years ahead.
This year's conference theme, "The Drive for Equality," sums up our commitment to keep changing our laws, our government and our society until women have true equalityfor ourselves, our sisters, our mothers, our daughters and our granddaughters.
With two branches of government aligned against us, and the Supreme Court precariously balanced, women's rights are in greater peril than they've been in over a decade. And at this conference we're fighting back by launching a new campaign to preserve women's rights through a massive grassroots mobilization of feminist votersaptly titled "The Drive for Equality."
I'm proud to welcome the 2004 Presidential candidates to a forum on women's issues, which I will be moderating with the fabulous political comedian Elayne Booslerand afterwards you can bid on great political memorabilia and one-of-a-kind items to benefit the NOW Political Action Committee.
U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez of California and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton will give us insiders' perspectives and advice on the current political climate and the best ways to effect change in Washington. And we will honor U.S. Representative Barbara Lee with NOW's Woman of Courage Award for her fearless support of women's rights, civil liberties and peace as a member of Congress.
Kicking off our exciting plenary session on Leadership in the 21st Century will be author, activist and young feminist icon Rebecca Walker, co-founder of Third Wave, the only national activist and philanthropic organization for women aged 15-30. Author of "Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self," Walker will launch an intergenerational panel of distinguished NOW leaders to discuss feminist leadership in these challenging political times.
In addition to connecting with feminist activists from across the country, sharing stories and swapping strategies, you'll attend interactive workshops on hard-hitting issues and action planning. And don't miss the five-session Political Institutehands-on training from the experts on recruiting, campaigning for and electing feminists to public office.
Our rights are in jeopardy from the Bush administrationbut working together in our Drive for Equality, and with our many allies, we can change the face of Washington in 2004 and secure essential rights and freedoms for future generations.
Look out George Bush, here we come!
For equality and justice,
Kim A. Gandy
President
