Call for NOW National Committee Applications
September 19, 2007
NOW has several ad hoc advisory committees that work on various issues, as well as a National Young Feminist Task Force. The committees generally do their work via listserve and/or conference calls, although some meet at the national conference (which will be in Washington, D.C., in July 2008).
With one exception, committees will be appointed (or reappointed) at the January 2008 board meeting. The exception is a new committee, to be appointed at the National Board meeting on October 20, 2007. The deadline for submitting a Letter of Interest for consideration is October 18, so feel free to pass along this notice to anyone you feel would be interested in applying.
The new committee for which NOW's president will be making appointments on October 20 is the Health Issues of Women in the Military ad hoc Committee. This committee will work with other organizations working in these areas and appropriate military and veterans service organizations to address health issues of women in the military, including violence and sexual assault, so as to develop strategies and action plans and bring these plans to the National Board.
At the January board meeting, appointments will be made to the following existing committees, and the deadline for those applications is January 1, 2008. At the end of this message is the application procedure. The names of the available committees and their purposes follow:
Young Feminist Task Force - a committee of young feminists aged 30 and under to advise the Board of Directors and National Conference on matters of agenda, leadership recruitment and issue prioritization regarding young feminists in NOW. We would particularly like to have increased representation from young feminists of color and high-school and college-age activists.
Mothers and Caregivers Economic Rights ad hoc Committee - to work with the board and officers to develop state-based and national strategy on issues surrounding the economic rights of U.S. mothers and caregivers, including online resources and action kits, talking points, programming ideas, media resources, and other materials
Family Law ad hoc Committee - to work and to further advise the NOW National Board of systematic changes or harmful legislation that adversely impacts women in the family court system and impedes justice and equality in the courtroom, and related strategies.
Global Strategies and Issues ad hoc Committee - to more fully develop NOW positions on foreign policy and the impact of U.S. foreign policy and expenditures on women worldwide, and help develop strategies to counter these policies if needed.
Equal Marriage ad hoc Committee - to work with the board and officers to develop and implement a strategic pro-active education campaign on equal marriage, addressing state and federal legislation, ballot initiatives, and efforts to influence and move public opinion and policy-makers.
Disability Rights ad hoc Committee - to work with the national NOW action center to fully integrate issues of women with disabilities into our feminist work on domestic violence, child custody, health care, equality in employment and education, lesbian rights, body image, reproductive and abortion rights and all feminist issues.
Please submit (or encourage any interested applicant to submit) a letter of interest to ComApp@now.org (with the subject line "Committee") explaining your NOW involvement or connection, past involvement in the specific issue or subject area, and what you would bring to the committee's work. Feel free to also include any endorsement from NOW leaders or others on your behalf. Be sure to submit your information by the deadline(s) above.
Thanks for your interest in NOW committees!
