Lt. Brenda
Berkman is one of the most famous fire fighters in the country.
Not because of the fires she's put out, but because of the burning issues
she's raised. In 1982, her federal sex discrimination lawsuit resulted
in the first ever hiring of women firefighters in New York City.
Subsequently, she has built both local and national women's firefighter
organizations and carried her message of non-traditional employment for
women as high as the White House. Lt. Berkman has hoisted a torch that
illuminates the needs of women everywhere. One that, in her hands
and ours, will never be extinguished.
