Lee Gillian knows all about life at the bottom. Fifteen years
ago, she got her start in construction thanks to NEW (Non-traditional Employment
for Women) and was promptly "put to the test" by her male colleagues: walking
the plank and pushing loaded mortar boxes. That she earned their
respect in short order was just the beginning for this determined woman.
Now, as shop steward for Union Laborers Local 79 and president of Working
Women in Construction, she's using that respect to help other women get
their just dues on (and off) the site. So, how high can a woman rise
