Miami Beach Site of 2000 National Conference
Hot Hot Hot
Miami Beach will be the site of the 2000 National
NOW Conference to be held June 30th through July 2nd at the opulent
(though reasonably priced) Fontainebleau
Hilton Hotel. The Fontainebleau has three great swimming pools and
is located directly on a historic stretch of the Atlantic Ocean beach where
Christina Columbus would have landed in 1492, had NOW been in existence
then. Miami Beach is rated as one of the best beaches in the world and
will be the site of a rematch of the NOW Regional Volleyball Tournament
held on this very spot sixteen years ago. The entertainment will be tropical,
featuring the hot Latin rhythms of Cuban jazz singers as well as the beat
of Caribbean steel drum bands. Fabulous gifts are being donated for a festive
auction to benefit the NOW Political
Action Committee, whose sole purpose is to help elect more feminists
to public office.
Fun Fun Fun
Miami Beach is home to the largest
Art Deco district anywhere. This district was saved from destruction almost
single-handedly by Barbara Baer Capitman. Her foresight and dedication
have made this charming and unique environment a favorite of visitors to
south Florida. This colorful and architecturally interesting part of history
is located only a few miles from the hotel. Moderately priced ($10/person)
guided pre-conference tours of South Beach and the Art Deco District are
being offered Thursday, June 29th, and Sunday, July 2nd. Be sure to make
your travel arrangements to arrive early and stay late.
Cool Cool Cool
South Florida boasts some of the best coral reefs in the world. The Florida
Keys provide swimming, snorkeling and diving opportunities for skill levels
from novice to expert. John
Pennycamp, the country's first underwater park and marine life preserve,
will be the site of our Monday, July 3rd post-conference tour. This park
is home to over 500 species of tropical fish, live coral, sea anemones
and more. The post-conference tour will cost $50/person and include round
trip bus transportation to the Keys, a two-stop snorkeling trip with all
equipment provided and a seafood buffet. We know you and your family will
not want to miss this thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience. You must
hurry to pre-register as space is limited to an absolute maximum of 90
(37 places are already reserved).
And, oh yes
The conference itself will be stimulating, educational and inspiring. Of
course there will be national and international speakers
and terrific workshops to bring us all up
to speed on the latest feminist news and activist fronts. There will be
a Political Institute in which each of us will learn the secrets of electing
feminist candidates; discussions of women and power; intergenerational
dialogue; and new and exciting organizing strategies and methodologies.
Important by-laws amendments on NOW's statement of purpose and undelegated
conferences will be vigorously debated and voted upon.
The 2000 conference is going to be fabulous. You won't want to miss
it. Bring your family, come early and stay late. Fourth of
July fireworks on the beach are spectacular. You might just want to arrange
a pre- or post-conference vacation to Disney World, Key West, the Bahamas
or a Caribbean cruise. The conference travel agent or local chapter would
be happy to help with plans.
