Tis the Season...For Giving
by Liz Gilchrist, Director Major Gifts and
Planned Giving
For every question about easy and effective ways
to support NOW, we have answers. Here is your guide to making the most of
your gifts to NOW.
Looking for a convenient, no-fuss way to support NOW? Consider
becoming an Equality Action Partner. The amount you choose to give each
month is automatically deducted from your checking account or charged to
your credit card. Joining the monthly sustainer program is an easy way to
make regular gifts to NOW without a lot of paperwork or bother. And now,
you can also make a monthly pledge to support our electoral work through
NOW's Political Action Committees.
Tired of keeping track of whether your NOW membership is current? You
can become a Lifetime Member of NOW with a one-time gift of $1,000. It's a
great way to demonstrate your lifetime commitment to feminist activism and
to avoid those pesky renewal notices. And . . . the price hasn't gone up
since 1986 and may be increased in the coming year. Act NOW!
Holiday shopping got you down? Why not buy the feminists and
“oughta-be” feminists on your list one of the great products from the NOW
catalog. From books and jewelry to t-shirts and bumper stickers, there's
bound to be something wonderful for everyone on your list. Or, you might
want to give the gift of NOW membership this holiday season. A year full
of opportunities for activism in support of women's rights just might be
the best present you ever give the young (or young at heart) feminists in
your life.
Interested in making your gift to NOW stretch farther? Check with the
human resources department of your employer to see whether your company
has a matching gifts program. These programs allow corporations to match a
percentage of your gift to charity at no cost to you. If you are eligible,
your donation to NOW could effectively grow by as much as 100%. (Do keep
in mind that in most matching gifts programs, only tax-deductible gifts
can be matched; in that case, your matching gift should be made to the NOW
Foundation.)
Need a tax-wise way to support our work for women's rights? As the end
of the year approaches, many people find that their financial situations
make tax-deductible giving more desirable. Or perhaps you prefer to make
your contributions through a donor-advised fund or a family foundation,
which may limit you to making tax-deductible donations. The NOW Foundation
fills the bill perfectly!
Gifts to the NOW Foundation are fully tax
deductible to the extent allowed by law. NOW Foundation is a sister
organization to NOW, and its purpose is to work for women's rights through
education, litigation and outreach. A number of important programs,
including our litigation against anti-abortion terrorists and the Women's
Health Project (which sponsors Love Your Body Day featured on page 2 in
this issue) are projects of the NOW Foundation.
If you wish to
support the NOW Foundation with tax-deductible gifts, please be sure to
make your check payable to NOW Foundation or specifically designate your
credit card gift. Just remember that the NOW Foundation has no membership,
so your membership gifts and renewals to NOW are not tax
deductible.
Ups-and-downs of the stock market got you down? Now might be a great
time to make a gift of stock or other securities to NOW or the NOW
Foundation. Any mutual funds or shares of stock whose current value is
greatly in excess of their value or price at the time you acquired them
are good candidates for donation. By making a gift of highly appreciated
securities, you may be entitled to significant tax savings and may be able
to avoid capital gains taxes. Ask your financial advisor how a stock gift
might allow you to make a much larger contribution to NOW or the NOW
Foundation than you could with a cash gift, or contact Liz Gilchrist,
NOW's Gift Planning Director, at 202-628-8669, ext 112, or email Liz by email.
