Standing Up for Abortion Rights and a True Hero in Germantown, Maryland

by Georgia Maclean, Field Intern (Summer 2011)

Dr. LeRoy Carhart's clinic in Germantown, Maryland, is currently the target of the anti-choice movement lead by Operation Rescue. They have chosen to target Dr. Carhart because the procedures he performs include later-term abortions.

Troy Newman, the head of Operation Rescue, is notorious for encouraging violence against clinics and the harassment and stalking of abortion providers. While Newman and his followers try to act like they respect women and are peaceful protesters, there are links between the murder of Dr. Tiller in 2009 and Operation Rescue. As far as "respecting" women, yesterday Newman leaned out of his car as he drove by our peaceful presence and screamed, "I'm Troy Newman, bitch!" Last time I checked, bitch was a derogatory word to yell at woman -- good work, Troy.

The antis in Germantown are lined up along the sidewalk outside of Dr. Carhart's clinic. We (the dedicated pro-choicers) are down the street, on the same side of the sidewalk. They have their area and we have ours. On Monday morning, the antis arrived and started invading our designated space. They brought tons of children with them, ranging in age from a few months to about 14 years old. They had young teenage girls holding up signs that read, "The Pill Kills." One mother had her one-year-old son helping her hold up a sign that read, "What about the baby's choice?" -- the irony being that this poor child surely did not want to stand out in the 100 degree heat holding up a sign when he could be playing or napping.

The antis paraded through our area mumbling Hail Marys and praying for our souls. Troy Newman was announced, as well as other prominent religious leaders and anti-choice terrorists, including Joe Scheidler and Patrick Mahoney. Some men came over and started shouting at us, and one would not stop ranting and trying to provoke us. But we held strong against their harassment, shaming and disregard for women's bodily autonomy.

Please come join us in Germantown, and help us hold OUR signs that say, "Trust Women," "Keep Abortion Legal," "Family planning saves women's lives," "Abortion is healthcare. Healthcare is a right" and "We <3 Dr. Carhart." We have had many honks of approval from cars passing by, while the antis had very few. As a resident of both Maryland and Montgomery County, I can say that we want this clinic in our community. The majority of Marylanders -- and those across the U.S. -- support a woman's right to abortion, and we will not be bullied by a small minority of anti-choice fanatics using their faith as a mask for their terrorism.

The antis are expected to be out in full force in the coming days. If you believe in a woman's right to chose and control her own body, join us in supporting Dr. Carhart. He is truly a hero who has sacrificed his own security to help women deal with unplanned and difficult pregnancies. Help us honor him by defending his clinic and thanking him for his life's work.

Thank you, Dr. Carhart.

Dr. Carhart is a monster! No different than Joseph Mengele. Abortions in the third trimester are never necessary. They are simply more convenient for the woman. I know three ladies that had a late second trimester abortion. Only one was done because deformity of the fetus.

Dear mom3, you are confused and lack the true facts of abortion. Perhaps you simply deny or reject them.
Why do you want to control other women? Since you have implied with your sign in that you have brought three pregnancies to term you would know that women have many complex reasons to terminate a pregnancy. Who are you to judge?

Why do other women want to control the very lives of others. It's never a right to dismember another human being. Women want to talk about violence commited against them while marching for the right to commit the most deadly violence against others. It's the pro abortionists who want to hide the facts about abortion. Why do you think they fight so hard to keep women in the dark about abortion procedures. If their is nothing wrong with abortion as they claim then why fight so hard to keep details hidden.
Yes, I have three children, one seven months old. I could feel him moving when I was sixteen weeks pregnant. He was and is a human being. Not tissue to be flushed away.
Who are you to make yourself judge and jury to condemn another person to death.Thats what you do when you have an abortion.
I've actually done quite a bit of reading on abortion. I have family and friends and coworkers who have had abortions. My aunt had one to cover up an affair because her husband had a vasectomy and would know the child wasn't his. I know six women who have had abortions, only one because of medical reasons, because the baby had no brain.
Three of those abortions were late second trimester abortions. One because the lady was getting a divorce and didnt want to carry "his" baby. One because she decided she couldnt handle another baby, a little late to decide dont you think? The other was a friend of a family member who was a practicing satanist who would purposely wait till later in pregnancy to abort because that was her sacrifice to satan. I know she had two abortions like this. My family no longer associates with her because of this. Not all women are sugar and spice.

So you make the decisions for others, you above all else set the 'standard' and woe to those who don't accept your reasoning. If there are over a million a year, a million women do not accept your position. They value their lives and their families; it is clear you do not value women's lives. A parent can not be forced to give up a body organ to benefit a child in the U.S., nor do women have to give up their bodies to continue a pregnancy, after all it is a parasite in a woman's body.Fetal worship is not pretty.

Ah and this is the crux of the matter for you. Women that dare to care for themselves, that but themselves, their happiness, their health and their loved ones first. Yes, I understand now.

If they were taking care of themselves in the first place they wouldnt need abortions. How many forms of birth control are on the market? Theirs lots to choose from.

Fetal dismemberment is not pretty either. What you call worship I call compassion, something you would know nothing about. If you did you wouldnt like to see the agony of one dieing in such a way either.

D&E abortion- Forceps are used to grab hold of a limb (arm or leg) and then twisted until it comes off at the joint, this continues systematically until the baby is removed from the womb then suction cleans up any shredded tissue that was left behind.. Yeah, you guys are good hearted people.

As you well know birth control is not always affordable and is becoming less everyday the Republicans have their way. It is also not fail safe. Of course if men demanded birth control and used it- it would be most helpful to women, but they don't suffer the consequence of an unintended pregnancy directly as women do, so they don't bother.
As to the agony of dying, as you probably know know that is a fallacy made up by your group and repeated by folks like you, but repetition does not make it true.

Misogyny is all too obvious in the public jousting over abortion, with opponents and defenders alike cooperating to harass women already pregnant rather than focusing critical attention on those responsible for initiating pregnancy. If the "abortion debate" involved a shred of honest concern for women and children, the target of regulation, legislation, and restraint would be men - the class highly vocal in the blame game but never mentioned as the source of the problem which so excites them. It is men's unregulated and uncontrolled fertility that should be subject to restraint. Instead of weeping crocodile tears over abstract infants while ignoring the needs of real children, or substituting hollaback demonstrations for strong demands for protection by public officials, this game should be exposed for what it is - constitutionally validated sex discrimination that cruelly targets women's unique reproductive organs.

The I hate men mantra. yes, men should use common sense as well as women. I personally wouldnt trust any man to not get me pregnant. I take responsibility for myself. It has nothing to do with sex discrimination, I know you feel the need to be able to abort so you can feel free 'like a man' but thats absurd. I dont feel any inferiority to a man because I can conceive and he cant. I honestly dont see why being a woman makes you feel inferior. I worked a full time job, raising two kids and now that I have three I chose to quit work and stay home. I dont have lots of money and we've sacrificed alot of things so I can be home, but its worth it. In fact I take pride in being a woman because I can run circles around my husband when it comes to the kids, house, meals, even when I was working and juggling dentist, doctor and other appointments. If anything I feel superior to him in a lot of ways. I wish some women didnt see their gender as an oppressed negative.

Mom3 I don't know of any women that feel inferior to men. I also don't know any women that feel superior to men. Feminists are working for equality. If you feel good about your lot in life, good for you. But don't try to keep the rest of womanhood in your lot. Because we want men to be responsible does not mean we hate men. I am hearing Promisekeeper thinking from you. Submission of women-protection of men. The point is about the systemic oppression of some and the systemic privilege of men. It is not about your particular life.

The way you see privelege of men was given by God not by government. The republicans evil conspiracy to take all condoms off dollar store shelves is a little far fethched. Being pregnant in your point of view is systematic oppression? If thats true arent you guilty of oppressing yourself.
Working for equality? Tell me what career as a woman your not able to pursue? In what area of life are you unable to pursue your dreams? I'm not talking bout abortion because you guys use that as a crutch. What other areas are you oppressed? Please tell me.

Again you refer to women of your class, you have expressed no concern for women raised in poverty. It really is a waste of time to engage with you. You have your belief in the supernatural. I suppose you are a troll. I will not engage with you any longer.

wow, atheists turn out to be the biggest bigots and most intolerant people of all. What a shocker! After all you guys try the hardest to suppress free speech.

Honestly, I think you cant come up with one single instance where your truly oppressed, so you bolt. Guess your silence proves my point.

By the way, I grew up in a family of four and my dad made 9$ an hour. Not exactly what you call a middle class family. In fact according to the U.S. government we we lived at the poverty level. But I dont use that as an excuse to kill my children.

Tell me one more time why I'm a troll you bigot. Oh, I remember because I beleive in God. Guess what your in the minority, so I guess you have to interact with us trolls everyday.

I'm an atheist, I want my way. The other billions of people on this earth that beleive in God has to bow to a few million of us or we will sue you in court. Dont speak of God at graduations you might offend me, I dont care if I suppress you as long as you bow to me. Don' t say
Jesus or I'll thow a tantrum, the ACLU is on my side. The organization that was started by communists will defend me at all costs. I revel in the deaths of babies ,christians and conservatives because these people suppress my desire to do as I please. I have no morals and no concern for others, why should I? Their is nothing to look forward to, so you should be as hopeless as me.

How pathetic!!!!!!!

Note to @mom3 and anyone who is unfamiliar with the widespread discrimination that women face: Please spend some time on the main NOW website. There is a plethora of information there about women's inequality. If you want the full picture, don't just glance at the front page. Look on each issue page, and also check out all the sections under "about" -- a whole encyclopedia could be written about the injustice that women have endured.

I know women have been suppressed in the past, the rule of thumb law, credit, voting etc. But it seems to mean your main goal, focus and attention is abortion. Why? How does the 'right' to get rid of your child make you equal. It makes you no different than a man who beats his child to death.
