Protest Stupak Amendment Next Two Mondays

by Liza Doubossarskaia, NOW Communications Intern

Strip Stupak!

Last weekend feminist activists watched in distress as, one by one, 240 members of Congress, many of whom were Democrats, voted to pass the Stupak Amendment, which severely interferes with a woman's right to choose. If the Stupak Amendment is included in the final version of the health care reform bill, it will: prevent women receiving tax subsidies from using their own money to purchase private insurance that covers abortion; prevent women participating in the public health insurance exchange from using 100 percent of their own money to purchase private insurance that covers abortion; and make it next to impossible for low-income women to obtain an abortion.

The Democratic leadership might have decided to compromise women's rights in order to push through the health care bill, but women whose lives are directly affected by Stupak's draconian measures will not stay silent.

Signs at the November 9th protest against the Stupak Amendement

Just this Monday, activists from NOW and the Feminist Majority gathered to express their discontent by staging a rally in front of the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. I was there and am happy to report that the rally was a smashing success. There were about 30 of us altogether -- an impressive number considering we only had 24 hours to organize the event. We proudly marched around the block, letting our voices be heard, so that our representatives would know how ardently we disapprove of their actions. All of the activists present had great energy, and everyone around us was definitely paying attention.

Activist: My Body. My Money. My Choice.

As we walked, other women stopped to cheer us on and state their displeasure with the Stupak Amendment. Quite a few of them asked for our NOW stickers, so we gladly passed them out.

Our rally also attracted a couple of anti-choice protestors. One of them followed us around, shouting at us from a megaphone. His intent was clear: he was trying to intimidate us, to make us go away. However, his megaphone proved to be no match for the combined power of our voices, and we easily drowned him out.

NOW encourages you to join us and other activists Monday, Nov. 16 and 23, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm in front of the Russell Senate Office Building. This is a great opportunity to network with your fellow women's rights activists and get some fresh air while you're at it.

Women are 51 percent of the population, yet we are continuously subjected to discriminatory laws. It is time we let our politicians know that their disregard for reproductive health care is unacceptable and that we will not idly stand by and watch as our rights are being taken away.

What a wonderful looking group. My chapter is putting together copies of letters and emails we've already mailed into a stack we can hand deliver to our Senators.

I consider my self pro choice but I have a severe issue with contributing my tax dollars for abortions.

I have an idea. Make only people who support tax contributions for abortions contribute part of their paychecks.

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid should not push their poor excuse of morality on me.

dear cabaret voltaire,

this organization supports a woman's rights to safe, legal, and accessible abortion. non-negotiable.

an abortion is a medical procedure and an important health care service. plain and simple.

Dear Cabaret Voltaire,
We all pay for things we don't support. Let's revamp the tax laws so that I don't have to pay for war. I am so tired of that silly argument.

@feminista & feminist123:

1. Abortion is not a necessary medical procedure unless the woman develops pregnancy complications.

2. Agreed, paying for war is unacceptable, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Lysistrata: She Says No. No to Stupak. No to all but HR 676. No money, no volunteering, no votes, no support. NO!

No more support of the Democrats until they start supporting women's rights!

Please remember it is the Stupak/PITTS Amendment. The Rs put the D up front to divert attention from the fact that this is a premeditated radical right attack on women's rights. Pitts (PA-16) is a long time foe of abortion rights [active and longtime member of the "Family"] and must be defeated in 2010. I plan to do just that but I need your help. Go to www.herr2010.com and support my campaign. Watch for events and rallies coming up in PA-16, which includes all of Lancaster County and parts of Chester and Berks Counties.

How unfortunate that we are now fighting to regain rights we already had. We truly act like a begging minority. We are not a minority. "Women and minorities". Wrong! We are the majority and we ACT like we are ten percent. This is why we find ourselves constantly begging for rights we are entitled to simply by being alive. The 2nd wave knew this. It must be understood again.

Now they are going to take away our mammograms before 50. I shudder at how many I know who died from breast cancer before age 50 without hereditary factors.

We have lost ground. Plenty of it. Very sad. My party has been conning me for decades, hanging abortion over our heads, acting like they are giving us crumbs with plenty of "talk" and no action. Keeping us in line by hinting that they hold our rights in their hands. WRONG! We hold them in our hands. We are the majority and must act like it.

I read where the ERA was submitted to the House in July. Funny how they could find time to bring Stupak to the floor but not the ERA. It's doubly disgraceful that this is all happening under a female speaker.

I am infuriated because I am watching women lose more and more respect every single day.

I am tired of politicians putting their stamp on what I can do with my body--abortions is not an easy choice and while I would not choose to do so, I blieve it is a woman choice. I think it is time for equality--- -I want it written into law that any man who causes unwanted pregnancies is to be casterated and immediately. Wonder how they will feel about government regulation over their male parts. I think it is time to raise our voices and demand that this be made into law to reduce unwanted pregnancy.
