BELOW THE BELT: DON'T BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE JUST YET This wouldn't be an election year without the issue of reproductive justice and abortion rights making an appearance on the proverbial table. Sadly, the ongoing debate over what women may or may not do with their bodies rages on. I stubbornly believe that one day women and girls will no longer be treated and looked upon as public property. After hearing a multitude of protests, Secretary Mike Leavitt of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wrote in his blog that it wasn't his intent. Let's make sure it isn't. NOW FOUNDATION JOINS BRIEF TO PROTECT SHACKLING OF PRISONERS GIVING BIRTH This brief, filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, argues that the practice of shackling women prisoners during childbirth is a violation of the health, safety, rights and basic human dignity of pregnant women. HOUSE PAY EQUITY BILL PASSES The most important piece of pay equity legislation to be considered in decades, the Paycheck Fairness Act, was passed by the House on July 31. Fourteen Republicans joined Democrats to pass the historic measure with a final vote of 247 to 178.
