| It's NOW's birthday, and it's
time to get down and get busy. Join feminist activists from
around the country for NOW's 2006 National Conference and
Young Feminist Summit, July 21-23, north of the apple in New
York's capital, Albany.
Reconnect with old friends and make new ones during yoga
in the morning, parties in the evening and, as always, lively
political workshops, action planning, and inspiring speeches
in between. The Young Feminist Summit takes place on Friday,
featuring keynote speaker Taina Bien-Aimé, the Executive
Director of Equality Now, one of the leading organizations
in the global struggle against trafficking. That same day,
NOW will also be honoring world renowned singer-songwriter
and activist Ani DiFranco, as well as the Allegheny County
Girls as Grantmakers Team, whose activism pressured Abercrombie
& Fitch to pull offensively-labeled shirts from the market,
and Brian Collins and his Ogilvy & Mather team that helped
created Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign.
NOW's Political Institute will take place throughout Friday
and Saturday. Hon. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Ambassador
Carol Moseley Braun will be there, as well as numerous other
women politicians and candidates. Everything from effective
blogging to fair elections to feminism and faith will be discussed
in workshops during the weekend.
On Saturday we will honor Dr. Susan Wood, who resigned from
the FDA in protest, and we will celebrate NOW's 40th anniversary
with tributes to the organization's founders and leaders and
a rocking party, complete with cake and confetti. We'll close
the conference with consideration of resolutions on NOW's
actions and policy for the coming year, as well as an exciting
rally on Sunday.
So, pack your things and book it to Albany for a weekend
of invigorating feminist action!
