HELP US GROW OUR E-ACTIVIST COMMUNITY |
Dear feminist activist,
The past few months have been tough for women, with the confirmation of two ultra-conservative justices to the Supreme Court.
I hope you'll join me for a moment -- to savor our successes -- before we move on to the many battles ahead.
But first let me say: YOU ARE AMAZING! You're always there when we put out a call for action. Your responses to our action alerts -- your calls and email messages to decision-makers -- have made a difference! For example, you've helped:
- Push through renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, which provides vital funding to combat domestic and sexual violence,
- Force the Bush administration to restore collection of statistics about women's employment. Without them, it's harder to prove the extent of the wage gap and other workplace discrimination,
- Pressure DISH Network to restore Lifetime TV, the number one women's cable channel, after they pulled it on December 31, and
- Save Social Security from being eviscerated by greedy brokers on Wall Street and their congressional mouthpieces.
And even when victory was out of reach, your help brought us some real successes. For example, in the past few weeks -- working together -- we:
- Defied conventional wisdom, which said that mounting a filibuster was impossible. You helped us convince 25 senators not to quietly accept the coronation of Samuel Alito, but to stand up and be counted.
- Held off passage of the cruel budget cuts for two months, and pressured so many moderate Republicans to vote against the budget that it only squeaked by with a 218-216 margin - only two votes!
Just think what might have happened with twice or three times as many of us taking action!
Our targeted campaigns using email and phone alerts are an important (and effective) tactic in the fight for women's rights. They educate hundreds of thousands of individuals, and inspire many of them -- like you -- to take action to accomplish real changes in policies that disadvantage women.
We need your help to reach out to more people like you and expand our online community to be even more effective.
We were able to accomplish so much last year -- just think what we could do if we multiplied our impact by doubling or tripling our online activist base. We need your help to bring more people in through petition campaigns, online advertising in Google or in popular feminist blogs. A single banner ad on a popular web site could bring hundreds, even thousands, of new activists into our online community - doubling and tripling the power of our efforts.
We need your support to make this happen.
NOW is a unique organization because, while e-activism is an important part of our work, we do so much more than send informative and action-generating emails.
NOW is not just in your inbox, we are on the ground working in local communities, in state legislatures, and nationally in the fight for women's rights.
When right-wing legislators introduce new and creative ways to limit women's reproductive options, NOW is right there -- letting them know that we will not compromise on women's essential rights. And we are pro-active in recognizing new needs and challenges, and doing whatever is needed to bring those issues to the forefront.
NOW has 40 years of experience in grassroots activism and the passion to create change and increase opportunities for women and girls. With your help, we can make our e-activism every bit as effective and inspiring as our marches, rallies, and on-the-ground organizing.
With your help we can build our dreams into reality.
For equality,
Kim Gandy
