Dear activist,
They can run but they can't hide.
We have just launched Enraged and Engaged! — The Women's Campaign to Defeat Alito — as a coordinated nationwide effort, led by NOW and the Feminist Majority as part of Freedom Winter '06, to stop the confirmation of extremist Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court. I need your help and support to mount the strongest possible campaign.
Senators who SAY they support women's rights, and have counted on our votes for years, aren't stepping up to plate when it really counts. Now that our future is on the line, now that we need their vocal support — well, the silence is deafening.
Women can't take this any more, and we won't. Those senators need to hear from their constituents that just as they have counted on our votes, we are counting on their vote to protect the Court and women's rights.
With your support, NOW will ensure that activists visit, call, and deliver messages to key U.S. Senators from home-state constituents in vast numbers to insist not only that they vote against the confirmation of Alito to the Supreme Court, but demand that they take leadership in opposing the nomination.
You can help make The Women's Campaign to Defeat Alito a success!
We're asking students to take their winter break and come to Washington in January to join NOW activists who are giving weeks of time in DC to staff our Campaign Center. Beginning on January 3, we will coordinate home-state campaigns, research senators' schedules and appearances, call constituents, organize cell-phone phone banks, hand-deliver letters and messages to Senate offices, and juggle the hundreds of other important tasks.
Your donation will help us provide critical campaign necessities, including materials for lobby briefings; subway fare from our headquarters to the Capitol; pizza for evening phone-bank volunteers; and organizing tools and materials for our Defeat Alito campaign offices, to name a few.
George W. Bush has nominated one of the most unreservedly conservative judges in the country to replace moderate Sandra Day O'Connor on the United States Supreme Court. Radical extremists can barely contain their glee. We must make sure that every Senator knows there will be a heavy price to pay if they vote to confirm Alito.
U.S. Senate hearings on the Alito nomination will take place in January. Even as I write to you, moderate senators are receiving enormous pressure from religious and political extremists.
We're doing everything in our power to demonstrate our concern and alarm and to counter the flood of fanatical pro-Alito messages. We're bringing constituents from all over the country, students, grassroots leaders and local NOW members, to Washington, DC, to sit on the doorstep of every Senator until they are heard. Your support will help make this happen.
Everything you and I have worked for is on the line. Alito's rulings during 15 years as a federal court judge reveal his disdain for reproductive freedom, protections against employment discrimination, access to Family and Medical Leave, and other individual rights and protections.
Please respond today with a generous contribution to help women Defeat Alito. I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you in advance for your support of NOW's massive grassroots campaign to keep Samuel Alito off the Supreme Court.
For justice and equality,
Kim Gandy
President, National Organization for Women
P.S. We CAN stop Alito, but we need your help to expand our outreach, equip new activists with the tools they need to be effective, and bring them to Washington to work at the Stop Alito Action Center and confront the Senators in whose hands this critical decision rests.
YOU can be a part of Women's
Campaign to Defeat Alito.
