MIERS NOMINATION RAISES IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FOR WOMEN

George W. Bush's nomination of White House Counsel Harriet Miers to serve as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court raises important questions for women's rights supporters. While we are pleased that Bush chose a woman for the High Court, her judicial philosophy is more important than her gender. Much important information about Miers remains unknown at this point. TELL BILL BENNETT AMERICA DOES NOT SHARE HIS RACIST VIEWS!

In response to Bill Bennett's racist and ignorant comments about aborting "every black baby" as a crime prevention measure, NOW activists joined Rev. Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus in protest last week outside the offices where Bennett was taping his show.

NOW PRESIDENT TO SPEAK AT WE ARE FAMILY UNITY RALLY

NOW President Kim Gandy will join allies in the fight for equality who are speaking at the We Are Family Unity Rally on Saturday, Oct. 15. As a longtime advocate for racial justice and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, NOW is coming together with the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) to stand against homophobia and to promote unity in the struggle for justice. TELL CONGRESS TO FINALIZE VAWA!

Although VAWA was recently passed by the Senate, Congress must convene a conference committee to address differences between the House and Senate versions before VAWA can be reauthorized. Urge Congressional leaders to begin work on finalizing the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act immediately. Sign the Petition


NOW OPPOSES 'DISAPPEARING' OF WOMEN WORKERS IN DATA COLLECTION

In August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) decided to discontinue collecting data on working women. NOW has signed a letter to members of Congress asking them to mandate data collection on working women. Read More

    PENSION BILL AIDS SPOUSES, BUT MAY ATTACK SOCIAL SECURITY

    Important pension legislation is currently moving through Congress. This bill contains improvements that will benefit many women. However, we are concerned that Congress may use this legislation to sneak though a partial privatization of Social Security, which would reduce benefits and make the program less stable.     OPPOSE HARMFUL BUDGET CUTS AND TAX BREAKS FOR WEALTHY

    The budget bill currently before Congress calls for tax breaks that drain the treasury and benefit the wealthy. Call Congress members toll-free Monday and Tuesday and urge them to oppose the bill. Take Action
