Additionally, NOW is opposing five ballot initiatives on the November 4 ballot. Below we have provided information on Barack, Betsy and our opposition to five ballot initiatives 46, 47, 48, 49 and 54. Learn more about them and spread the word!
Obama-Biden: The Ticket For Women
Why Obama? For more than a decade, Barack Obama has said "yes" to women's rights, while John McCain has consistently said "no" -- NO to pay equity, NO to contraceptive access and reproductive rights, NO to appointing Supreme Court judges who will uphold women's rights and civil rights, NO to funding shelters and other anti-violence programs, and NO to supporting working moms and dads with policies that support work/life balance. We join with Sen. Hillary Clinton in saying "NO" -- No Way, No How, No McCain! And we proudly stand arm-in-arm with her in putting our hopes and our dreams, our hard work behind the next President of the United States -- Barack Obama, and his running mate, longtime friend and ally of women, Sen. Joe Biden.

Colorado Ballot Initiatives
Colorado has a rich history of civic involvement in their democratic process, allowing the opportunity to write the state constitution through citizen proposed initiatives. Coloradans and state legislators have submitted a combined 18 initiatives for you to consider on Election Day. Given the quantity of the ballot measures, the National Organization for Women wanted to point out five critical measures that are directly in opposition to the issues we believe in and rights we fight for. We have organized them topically.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO OPPOSE THESE INITIATIVES!
Affirmative Action ? Amendment 46 (Colorado Civil Rights Initiative)
This deceptive ballot initiative sounds like it could come straight off the NOW website because it says that it bans "discriminating against or granting preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting."
But don't let this faux equality deceive you: this is a direct attack on Affirmative Action and the State of Colorado's efforts to combat generations of discrimination against women and people of color. NOW has been a long standing champion of Affirmative Action because despite the enormous gains made by the civil rights and women's rights movements, women and people of color still face unfair obstacles in business and education. An astonishing 70% of schools are not in compliance with Title IX, the federal equal education opportunity law. Nationally, for every dollar earned by men, women on a whole earn 77 cents, African American women earn 63 cents and Latina women earn 52 cents.

Right to work ? Amendments 47, 49, 54
These initiatives are a direct attack on working women and our union sisters. These three initiatives are designed to weaken the voice of small, local businesses and limit workers rights to organize, speak freely, and participate in the political process. They undermine the ability of hardworking Coloradans to make a difference on the issues that matter to families, like creating good jobs and increasing access to affordable health care.

Abortion ?- Amendment 48 (Definition of Personhood)
The potential consequences in the passage of this dangerous bill are staggering. By defining a "person" at the moment of fertilization, this constitutional amendment will put the health of a woman behind the "rights" of an unimplanted fertilized egg, which will make many forms of birth control illegal and will ban stem cell research, invitro fertilization, and emergency contraception for rape and incest survivors.
This constitutional amendment goes far beyond the average anti-choice rhetoric and puts the lives of women across Colorado in danger and takes away many options for family planning.
This extreme bill is being fought by our friends at Protect Families Protect Choices (protectfamiliesprotectchoices.com), and they put it best when they say "It Simply Goes To Far."
The "NO on 48" campaign is staging one all-state action and several local actions to protest this horrific bill.
